12/11/2023 0 Comments Traeger smoke stack cap height![]() ![]() ![]() I've been getting auger bind which makes for tremendous temp swings. I've been using Traeger pellets which come to find out don't work well with weak auger motors like the Pit Boss has. Also, pellet brand has a lot to do with performance. Keep in mind I'm not using the stock controller, but a PID controller that has a number of settings that can be changed to increase performance. I took off the cover plate for the chimney and plugged the holes in the top/back of the drum and it's made a tremendous difference in my grills performance. Have spent the better part of 2 days experimenting with this. ( the 10% is adjustable) The 700fb does have a cover plate on the right end where you could put a stack if you desired, so my plan is to remove that cover, plug the holes in the back with tinfoil, and try a low and slow. I've replaced my stock controller with a PID controller made by Savannah Stoker, and still have the same problem, although not as often since it has an auto relight feature that turns the burn rod back on if temp falls 10% below set temp. I would suggest that there's not sufficient air flow out of the grill, even with the fan. The problem I have with my 700fb is getting to lower temps (160 - 180) without the grill going out. In theory that can cause multiple problems. Therefore you're only getting a little over half the flow thru that a standard smoker stack has. ![]() The PB700 smoker has 5 holes that total about 5.6 sq. First, let's look at the facts: A standard smoker chimney has about 10 square inches of outlet. I like to have a lump charcoal grill again and this masterbuilt seems like it will do for me.There are multiple trains of thought on this subject in both directions. I am waiting on the spring sales coming soon as I am going to buy the Masterbuilt and move my PS1100 to the hunting cabin that 3 of my buddies bought this winter. My Yoder is far more superior when it comes to smoking meat so my PS 1100 is just for grilling steaks, burgers, hot dogs, and anything else I need to grill. ![]() I still had the original controller for the Pro Series 1100 so I placed that back in and fired up and it actually works just like it did the first day I about it. So I bought a new replacement Hopper from Pit Boss (got it really cheap I guess Pit Boss has too many laying around for the old PS1100) without the auger and fan since already have them and my hopper cut up to add the savannah Stoker and then the Rec-Tec so it look ugly with big square holes in it. I accidentally broke the Rec-Tec controller so I was about to order the Smoke Daddy Assembly that includes the Hopper, auger, fan, and PID controller then I said nah I am not putting that money into the grill. I loved my Pro Series 1100 and I have added 2 different controllers on it a Savannah Stoker and a Rec-Tec controller. I do not care if the grill cost $500 or $3000 they still need to put out a product that works. I understand that Pit Boss is a budget friendly grill, but Danson has to get better on supporting there product. Click to expand.I wanted something better and my yoder has been just perfect with not one issue. ![]()
